Does ChatGPT mark the images it makes?
Yes, twice over, and neither mark is visible:
- C2PA Content Credentials: metadata naming the tool and when the file was made. Platforms, editors, and file conversions can strip it.
- SynthID: an invisible watermark inside the image itself, which OpenAI says can survive some edits that remove metadata.
- Audio gets a SynthID watermark too. A visible watermark only appears if you ask the model for one.
What this means for marketers
Nothing here requires action from you. Worth considering: assume every ChatGPT image is traceable, and make your disclosure match what a platform label would say anyway.
