Does ChatGPT watermark text?
In the EU, it will. OpenAI said on October 5, 2026:
- Over the coming weeks it will add an invisible watermark to eligible ChatGPT and Codex text for users in the EU, on all plans.
- API customers anywhere can opt in to watermarked text for select models. It stays off by default.
- The detector is limited at first to approved researchers and expert organizations.
- OpenAI says short, edited, or translated text may not be detected, and a missing watermark does not prove a human wrote it.
What this means for marketers
The EU AI Act requires AI-generated text to be machine-detectable. Worth considering: copy drafted in ChatGPT for EU audiences may carry a hidden mark, even after light editing.
